The trail is traditionally run downhill. Run in this direction, the trailhead starts near Gold Hill. The trail eventually drops into Four Mile Canyon near Sugarloaf Mountain. Most of the trail follows an old disused train railbed. As such, it’s relatively flat and wide. About 2 miles into the trail, there are the remnants of a lodge. All that remains of the original lodge is a stone chimney stack, however it is now a picnic and camping area along with a scenic overlook of Boulder Valley to the east and the Indian Peaks Wilderness to the west.
We ran the trail with High Trail Expeditions and their new 2012 Pentastar V6-powered Jeep Rubicon Unlimited. The recently snow-covered trails were no match for this highly-capable vehicle.
