Middle St. Vrain 4×4 trail has always been a favorite of ours. It’s located just a short drive into the mountains from Boulder; it has a lot of the classic rocky mountain trail features like moderately challenging rock obstacles and water crossings; it has great wildflowers in the summer; it has gorgeous views of the Indian Peaks Mountains and the St. Vrain Creek; and along the way Middle St. Vrain trail provides access to great fly fishing and hiking in the Indian Peaks Wilderness.
Middle St. Vrain is usually run in combination with Coney Flats trail, as they meet up near the Wilderness boundary and form a good loop. However, there’s a water crossing on Coney Flats that is usually uncrossable until mid-summer.
