NAS Defender 90 Firetruck
Granville, OH
A few years ago, Granville Fire Department
decided to replace their aging Willys-Jeep grass firetruck.
The short list of finalists consisted of a Hummer,
3/4 ton truck or a Land Rover Defender 90. The Hummer
was ruled out because it was too wide for the tight
quarters the firemen needed to operate. The 3/4 ton
truck was vetoed because it required an extensive
(and expensive) list of modifications to be useful
as a fire truck. The winner was the nimble Defender
90, who's only modification, in addition to the standard
fire equipment, was upgrading the springs to heavy
duty.
The Grainville Fire Defender 90 spends
its life as a grass truck, specializing in rapid response
for small wildfires as well as search and rescue.
In the winter time, after the fire season has abated,
the rear tank is removed and the Defender provides
assistance on medic runs. (photos and info courtesy
